GLOBALIZATION AND NATIONAL ECONOMIES
I.) INTRODUCTION
The earliest evidence of globalization’s evolution can be dated back to the Chinese dynastic era when the “Silk Route” was constructed between Central Asia and Arabian lands.Long-gone civilizations exchanged silk and paper through this ancient route.Fast forward to the 21st century, the world has not changed much in essence: globalization has been immensely evolving national economies.Global peace and trade organizations work tirelessly to unite all economies as a single economy.Globalization has inherently gifted nations with low trade tariffs, free trade, and global supply chains that rapidly boosted the economic situation of many countries. However, the loss of economic sovereignty and widening economic gaps arrived as rampant by-products for emerging economies.
II.) WHAT IS THE CURRENT SITUATION OF GLOBALIZATION IN 2025?
III.) HOW HAVE NATIONAL ECONOMIES BENEFITED FROM GLOBALIZATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY?
i.) Initiation of free trade and low trade tariff reforms by the United Nations (UN) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) to encourage cross-border trade.
ii.) Led to economic growth and the alleviation of developing and underdeveloped countries. Example: China’s economy boosting after joining the WTO in 2001.
iii.) Gave rise to technology transfer from developed nations to developing and underdeveloped nations.
iv.) Promotion of labor migration to developed nations, leading to the transfer of remittances to home-nations. Example: Pakistani laborers working in civil and construction projects in the Middle East.
v.) Spread of global supply chains across the globe, bringing international investment to developing countries. Example: Apple products manufactured in the United States and assembled in China.
vi.) Establishment of multinational companies (MNCs) worldwide, providing citizens with employment and career opportunities. Example: Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, and Pizza Hut having franchises across the globe.
vii.) Introduction of the digital economy, giving rise to freelancing and e-commerce opportunities globally. Example: Upwork and Freelancer.com connecting global human resources with employers.
IV.) HOW WERE NATIONAL ECONOMIES ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY THE RISE OF GLOBALIZATION?
i.) Led to a loss of economic sovereignty for nations, as they are directed by global powers and organizations.
ii.) Caused a widening of the economic gap between developed and underdeveloped nations as developed nations continued to stabilize further.
iii.) Exploitation of labor forces in developing or underdeveloped nations by offering low wages and dangerous working environments. Example: Child labor in Bangladesh at textile factories.
iv.) Gave rise to economic dependence and future financial contagion as nations relied on other nations’ economies for growth. Example: Global financial crisis in 2008.
v.) Decline in tax and tariff collection of nations, leading to a reduced accumulation of investment in infrastructure and public affairs.
vi.) Exporting raw materials, which yields low financial benefits compared to tertiary products that offer high profits for the nation.
V.) CONCLUSION
In summation, globalization has fundamentally restructured national economies by fostering cross-border trade, technological advancements, and employment opportunities, acting as a vital catalyst for modern economic growth. However, it has simultaneously introduced profound vulnerabilities, including economic dependency, widening wealth disparities, and the erosion of economic sovereignty for emerging nations. Ultimately, to harness the true potential of a globalized world while mitigating its adverse economic impacts, nations must adopt prudent regulatory frameworks, equitable trade policies, and robust domestic safeguards.
