Due to the rise of social media and increasing internet penetration, people have become more aware of their rights and social issues. Globalization has also played its part. Today, public opinion has emerged as a potent force, significantly influencing all spheres of life, particularly legislative policies and the decisions of governments. The masses are no longer silent; they are using their freedom of speech to bring reforms to society. This novel force has resulted in climate action by governments; various states have formed national policies to tackle this existential threat, thanks to public opinion. Similarly, public opinion led to legislative actions for women’s empowerment. For instance, in Pakistan, due to an increasing number of cases of domestic and gender-based violence, various acts have been passed, such as the Punjab Protection of Women Against Violence Act 2016. This was made possible because the masses took to the streets and used social media platforms to protect marginalized and vulnerable sections of society. In addition, juvenile delinquents were previously treated like adults; if convicted, they were sent to adult prisons where they faced physical as well as sexual violence. However, public opinion changed the view, establishing that it is possible to treat and reform children guilty of violating the law. Thus, rehabilitation centers and Borstal institutions were formed. However, it is noteworthy that public opinion can also be a source of misinformation and propaganda instead of a positive tool. Therefore, legislation and vigilance are imperative without infringing upon fundamental rights.
