Most Pakistani students in schools and colleges, when asked about their future careers, give almost the same answer. Around 90% say they want to become a doctor, engineer, pilot or government officer. Rarely does anyone think about choosing something different. The famous movie “3 Idiots,” which is still popular among the young generation in India and Pakistan, gave a powerful message: one should follow their passion. Moreover, a famous dialogue from the film, “Don’t chase after success, pursue excellence.” Yet, years after release of the film, students still prefer the same limited career paths. This mindset is strongly enforced by parents. For example, in an average Pakistani household, it is often believed that strict parenting is necessary because children do not know what is good or bad for them. Similarly, when it comes to choosing a career path, parents often decide what their child should become in future. In fact, many people follow careers decided by their parents. But how many of them actually achieve success and mental satisfaction? Therefore, children must be given freedom to choose what they want to become. Here it is the responsibility of parents to provide an such environment where children can explore their inner potential and discover their true passion.
