AI: A Tool of Widespread Destruction

Throughout history, human inventions have invariably brought both transformative positive impacts and devastating negative consequences. The dual nature of technology is a recurring theme in human development, where every leap in capability presents a corresponding increase in existential risk. For example, while nuclear power has successfully fueled industries and significantly reduced carbon emissions, it simultaneously poses profound risks, such as the long-term management of radioactive waste, the potential for catastrophic accidents, and the persistent threat of nuclear proliferation and weaponry. Similarly, artificial intelligence (AI) represents one of humanity’s greatest scientific wonders, yet it carries far-reaching and potentially uncontrollable consequences for global security.As AI continues to evolve rapidly, it is already being integrated into military applications, fundamentally altering the nature of conflict. For instance, AI-powered drones, such as the Bayraktar TB2 and Switchblade 300, are capable of identifying, tracking, and engaging targets with minimal human intervention. This shift represents a transition toward autonomous lethal systems that operate with unprecedented speed and precision, effectively reducing the time available for human decision-making in high-stakes scenarios.A poignant example of this transition is the conflict that occurred in May 2025 between India and Pakistan. In this encounter, both sides deployed sophisticated AI-enhanced drones, including loitering munitions and Kamikaze UAVs, marking South Asia’s first large-scale AI-driven drone clashes. These engagements drastically changed combat dynamics, demonstrating that modern warfare is increasingly becoming a contest of algorithms rather than traditional manpower. Furthermore, both nations have made significant, arguably misaligned, investments in the development of AI-based weaponry.Meanwhile, in both countries, nearly half of the population endures extreme poverty, remaining deprived of essential needs such as food, clean water, and access to quality healthcare. Rather than harnessing the vast potential of AI for human welfare—such as in medicine, environmental protection, or economic development—nations are prioritizing its deployment as a weapon against each other. This misappropriation of resources creates a precarious scenario where, ultimately, no one is safe, and AI threatens to become the dominant force of destruction. Hence, without stringent international regulation and an ethical framework, AI possesses the distinct potential to cause widespread destruction on a global scale.
